Communicative Language Teaching in the Foreign Language Classroom

Communicative Language Teaching is a new way to teach foreign languages, which helps the students to retain the information, and motivates them in the learning process.

The older methods, usually involving meaningless drills and the foreign language taught in the native tongue, stem from a method which was designed in the 1950’s, called Audio-Lingual Methodology (ALM). This method puts the instructor at the center of the classroom, and involves little interaction between students. The conversation is stilted and unnatural, and bears no pertinent meaning to the student. Meaningless drills are at the center of the communication, whereby the student fills in the grammatical endings into the sentences, not even needing to understand the content of the sentence at all.
