German Review
The number of students who are learning German is much less than that of those who learn French, Spanish or Italian. Why? About 110 million native German Speakers spread across the world after all. It is spoken in most countries in East Europe as the second language. Due to the industrialization of the country where it is originated, German is frequently used in business circles. And German is also the second most popular language on the Internet.
The reunification of Germany reestablished the country as the major European player. This also will definitely reinforce the importance of the German language.
The dependent clauses and verbs are of the most difficult grammar in German. You will find that you cannot understand what the speaker says until you finish hearing the whole sentence. Till then you even don’t know if it’s positive or negative. This makes it a real challenge for simultaneous interpreters.
I heard a story that once an interpreter was in a theater in Germany with a foreign visitor. The actor had already spoken for a long time. But the interpreter translated nothing. The visitor was cannot wait but asked what the actor said. The interpreter said, “Wait, I still don’t know if it’s negative or not.” You might laugh at this. But this is the reality.
However, German is very close to English. They are of one family. You will find kinship everywhere during your learning experience.
There are three genders and four cases for nouns, which sounds not possible to master. However, nouns change their endings only in one case and other circumstances will be taken care of by the articles, adjectives and other modifiers that precede them. Knowing this, it will be found simple, right?
Just like doing anything else in your life, what we need to do in learning any language including German is to seat yourself comfortably at your desk and learn everything you are supposed to learn step by step. You will enjoy your progress.
