Which Languages To Learn Part 2 – Interest and Popularity
2. Interest.
Maybe you are just like me who am one of those who just love learning foreign languages. It fulfills your desire. I call you language-lover. You will never stop seeking for satisfaction in languages.
If you fall into this category, it doesn’t really matter which language you learn because any of them will give you what you want to look for in language learning.
3. Popularity.
You may relate to numbers to answer this. How many native people are there in the world? How many countries are using this language?
Aside from that, you don’t want to learn a language that there’s no book about in you local book stores. When you want to attend a course, it would be good to have them available in your neighborhood. What would it be like that you can turn to some people in your locality when you have some questions at hand? (Of course, this might be less of a problem because of the advent of the Internet.)
You might want to learn what most people around are learning. In China, English, Japanese, German are the most popular nowadays. You can see that from book stores. In USA, Spanish and French are the most popular.
Don’t take what other people say about a language too seriously. You want to have your own choice. Here’s my story:
My schoolmates told me that Japanese was easy to learn because we are Chinese. Most of the characters are similar. But when I started to learn I was frustrated most just with the similar part. They look the same but are not pronounced the same.
Another story is about my experience with German. People told me that German pronunciation was rigid. At first impression, it seemed true because of the dominance of the consonants in German. But when I started to learn, I think it’s one of the sexiest languages in the world especially when it is spoken by men just because of the rich expressiveness of consonants.
