Why People Fail In Foreign Language Learning (1)
What most people normally do is just admiring those that are communicating fluently with ex-pats, although they have spent equal or more time on learning a second language. At least, they think they have. So now we have to face this hard fact and find out why most people fail in foreign language learning.
According to my trials and errors, I think you will fail because of the shortage of the following terms.
1. Good reasons
People tend to say to themselves: “The language is fantastic. But learning it or not will not make any difference to me.” Some even think: “I am American. Why should I learn other languages? People all over the world are learning English, aren’t they?” You can always find more reasons not to learn second languages than to learn them.
You have to do something for great reasons in order to take it seriously and keep yourself motivated.
Popularity – you want to learn a language that are spoken by relatively many people so that you can use them often so as to keep you moving. What I do normally is do some research on a language that interests me at first impression.
I would go to a book store looking around to see what books are available for the language concerned. So that I know some books are ready to be bought when I finally decide to learn it.
Then I will get online to see if there are any free resources and courses. Maybe I can find some newspaper site with big circulation.
Thirdly, I turn on my radio to see if it can receive some programs in the very language. If not, Internet will come to my brain. It is a friend you can turn to anytime.
Perspective – you need momentum during the progress. Just imagine what it would be like when you are doing some presentation to foreigners who were showing their admiration by standing ovation.
Just use your imagination here. People are talking about a book that you translated on the television. You are playing games with people in another country through the Internet. You are at forums discussing eloquently with people from overseas.
we will talk about next reason why people fail in foreign language learning in the next post. Stay tuned.
